Tips for transitioning into cORPORATE SOCIAL WORK

As the field of Corporate Social Work continues to grow, those entering it are joining a new era of social work that isn't taught in schools and in fieldwork. From past experiences and current work, we've put together some tips for breaking into the field:

  1. Know your values. Before you apply for a corporate role, it's important to be clear about your own values and what you're passionate about. This will help you find a company that aligns with your values and where you can make a meaningful impact.

  2. Build your skills. Corporate social work requires a variety of skills, including communication, problem-solving, and project management. Make sure you have the skills and knowledge necessary to succeed in this field, and that you can communicate your transferable skills from your clinical/micro roles into corporate/macro settings.

  3. Network with others. Networking with other corporate social workers is a great way to learn about the field, get advice, and find job opportunities. Attend industry events, join online communities, and connect with people on LinkedIn. You can also sign up for our Peer Support groups by filing outthis form, or register for ourNetworking doc!

  4. Be a strong advocate. Corporate social workers need to be strong advocates for the causes they care about and for the fact that social workers are needed in certain settings. This means speaking up for what you believe in and advocating for your seat at the table.

  5. Stay up-to-date on trends. The field of corporate social work is constantly evolving, so it's important to stay up-to-date on the latest trends. This will help you stay ahead of the curve and make sure your work is relevant and impactful.

  6. Be patient and persistent. Corporate social work can be a challenging field, but it's also very rewarding. Be patient and persistent, and don't give up on your goals.

  7. Align your goals. Be clear about what you are looking for. What do you want to achieve in corporate social work? Once you know your goals, you can develop a plan to achieve them.

  8. Be flexible. Things don't always go according to plan in corporate social work, as there isn't one job that fits the mold of this growing field. Be prepared to adapt and adjust your plans as needed.

  9. Be positive. A positive attitude can go a long way in any field, especially a growing one. Stay positive and focused on your goals, even when things get tough.

Social workers are resilient, know how to ask the right questions, and have the courage to ask for what they want. We know social workers belong in every work setting - and the CSW field is just getting started!
